A person is dead and another wounded following an early Friday shooting at a dormitory complex on the University of New Mexico campus, prompting an immediate campus-wide search for the suspect. Authorities have initiated a widespread manhunt, with the suspect still at large.

The university swiftly moved to close its campus as law enforcement agencies conducted a thorough sweep of the area. Alerts were first issued just before 3:30 a.m. regarding the shooting at the Casas del Rio housing center, where campus police found two individuals with gunshot wounds; one fatally injured, the other suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

A subsequent shelter-in-place alert was sent via social media shortly after 6 a.m., confirming that multiple law enforcement agencies are actively involved in the ongoing investigation. Details regarding the victims’ identities and a description of the suspect have not yet been released.

The incident occurred as new students were visiting the central Albuquerque campus for orientation ahead of the fall semester, which is set to begin in approximately three weeks for the university’s 23,000 students.
