Tragedy in Rajasthan: School Roof Collapse Kills Four Children, Injures 17 Amid Monsoon Rains

At least four children have died and 17 others sustained injuries after the roof of a school building collapsed in India’s western state of Rajasthan. The devastating incident occurred on Friday morning shortly after daily prayers at a government-run school in Barmer district.

Authorities estimate that approximately 25 to 30 students were inside the classroom when the ceiling suddenly gave way. Local police suspect that the building’s deteriorating structure, exacerbated by recent heavy monsoon rainfall, may have been the cause of the collapse. Senior police officer Amit Kumar reported to the Press Trust of India that some of the injured remain in critical condition.

Rajasthan’s education minister, Madan Dilawar, has instructed officials to oversee the medical treatment for all injured children and ensure comprehensive support for the affected families. Speaking to AajTak news channel, Dilawar emphasized the need for proper arrangements and ensuring no difficulties are faced by the children or their families. He also confirmed that a formal investigation would be launched to determine the exact cause of the tragedy, adding that he had directed authorities to assess the situation and provide all possible assistance.

Indian television footage depicted locals and emergency workers utilizing cranes to clear debris, while anxious parents watched on. The sounds of wailing relatives were audible near the site. Rescue efforts continued late into the day, with local media reporting that 32 students had been pulled out alive, though some suffered severe injuries.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma issued a statement on X, reiterating instructions for concerned authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured children. The region, known for its extreme weather, has experienced intense monsoon rains in recent weeks, raising significant concerns about the safety of ageing infrastructure, particularly in rural schools.
