Lorain Police Officer Dies, Two Others Injured in Deadly Ambush Shooting; Suspect Killed

LORAIN, Ohio — A Lorain police officer has died from injuries sustained in a violent ambush shooting that also left two other officers wounded and the suspect dead.
Officer Phillip Wagner, 35, a three-year veteran of the Lorain Police Department, tragically passed away on Thursday. He leaves behind his wife and two young children. Wagner had been receiving treatment for critical injuries at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon when Officer Wagner and his partner, Officer Peter Gale, 51, were on a lunch break. Police report that Michael Parker, 28, ambushed them with a high-powered rifle. Officer Brent Payne, 47, rushed to the scene to assist and was also shot, currently listed in critical condition. Officer Gale sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to a local hospital.
The suspect, Michael Parker, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Elyria Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, with assistance requested from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).
