The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a major recall of approximately 5 million swimming pools linked to the tragic deaths of nine children. The recall targets specific above-ground pools, 48 inches or taller, manufactured by Bestway, Bestway (USA) Inc., International Ltd, Intex Recreation Corp., and Polygroup North America Inc.

The CPSC stated that the pools’ compression straps, intended for structural integrity, can inadvertently serve as footholds, allowing young children aged 22 months to three years to climb into the water unsupervised. The nine fatalities occurred between 2007 and 2022 across multiple U.S. states. This recall follows the finalization of updated safety standards in May 2025, aimed at preventing such access.

These pools, priced between $400 and $1,000, were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Target, Sears, Kmart, Lowe’s, and Toys “R” Us, as well as online platforms like Amazon. Consumers owning one of the affected pools are urged to immediately contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit. The kit includes a rope to replace the dangerous compression straps, which should be cut and removed to ensure safety. An additional 266,000 units have also been recalled in Canada.
