Urgent Safety Alert: 5 Million Pools Recalled After Child Drownings – Check Your Pool Now

A critical safety alert has been issued for over 5.2 million aboveground swimming pools sold across the U.S. and Canada, following reports of nine child drowning deaths. Consumers are urged to immediately inspect their pools and take action to prevent further tragedies.
The recall impacts a wide range of Bestway, Intex Recreation, and Polygroup pools sold by major retailers like Walmart, Target, Lowe’s, Costco, and Amazon, with sales dating as far back as 2002 and as recently as 2025. The danger stems from compression straps running along the outside of these pools, which can inadvertently create a foothold for small children, allowing them unsupervised access to the water.
Tragically, nine children, aged 22 months to 3 years old, drowned between 2007 and 2022 after gaining access to these faulty pools. No additional fatalities have been reported in Canada. All recalled pools are 48 inches or taller.
If you own one of these pools, it is imperative to contact Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup immediately to receive a free repair kit, which includes a rope to replace the hazardous compression strap. In the interim, regulators stress the importance of ensuring no small children can access the pool without constant, direct supervision. Alternatively, owners should consider draining the pool until the repair is completed. Specific brand and model names can be found on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada’s recall notices.
