A 17-year-old male has been formally charged with murder in connection with the death of 48-year-old paddleboarder Sunshine Stewart, whose body was discovered this month in Crawford Pond, Union, Maine. Authorities confirmed Friday that Deven Young of Frankfort, Maine, was taken into custody earlier this week and made his initial court appearance on Friday, where he entered a denial to the charge.

The tragic incident, which has sent shockwaves through the close-knit community, involved Stewart, a St. George resident, who was last seen paddleboarding on Crawford Pond on July 2. A medical examiner determined her cause of death to be strangulation and blunt force trauma. While a motive has not yet been disclosed by authorities, court documents state that Young ‘did intentionally or knowingly cause the death of another human being, namely Sunshine Stewart.’

Maine State Police have stated that the investigation remains highly active and are urging anyone with information regarding Stewart’s whereabouts or activities on July 2 to come forward. Young is currently being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center and is scheduled to appear in court again on August 22. Friends and family are mourning Stewart, remembering her as an independent and adventurous spirit, and have launched a GoFundMe to honor her life.
