Digital Foundry Delivers “Mixed” Verdict on Donkey Kong Bananza’s Switch 2 Performance

Digital Foundry has released its highly anticipated technical analysis of Donkey Kong Bananza on the new Switch 2 console, revealing a “somewhat mixed” performance profile for the latest adventure. While the analysis praises the game’s destructive environments and solid camera work, it also highlights several significant technical shortcomings.
Key issues identified include frequent pop-in, “extremely poor” shadow rendering, and dated lighting that harks back to previous Switch compromises, unlike titles such as Super Mario Odyssey’s updated visuals. Resolution dynamically scales between 1080p and 1200p, with some aliasing and “soft” visuals noted in certain environments. Portable mode generally offers better image quality, likely running at a consistent 1080p.
Performance is a major concern, with frame rate drops observed during specific animations and, more critically, sustained dips to 30 frames per second during boss battles and in photo mode. These drops are exacerbated by choppy destruction animations. Although portable mode with VRR offers some improvement, performance issues are not entirely eliminated.
Despite these technical hurdles, Digital Foundry suggests the issues may not entirely ruin the gameplay experience, but expresses a strong hope for future updates to address these observed compromises.
