FALL RIVER, Mass. — Nine individuals have been confirmed dead and over 30 others injured following a devastating fire that erupted Sunday night at an assisted living facility in Fall River. Officials, including Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quin III, identified seven of the victims on Monday as Rui Albernaz, 64; Ronald Codega, 61; Margaret Duddy, 69; Robert King, 78; Kim Mackin, 71; Richard Rochon, 78; and Eleanor Willett, 86. Two additional victims, a 70-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, are awaiting next of kin notification.

The blaze, which started around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Gabriel House on Oliver Street, prompted a massive emergency response. Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described a chaotic scene upon arrival, with residents seen hanging from windows and doorways awaiting rescue. First responders are credited with saving dozens of lives through heroic ladder rescues. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries during the operation.

While the investigation is ongoing, officials have stated the fire does not appear to be suspicious. Governor Maura Healey, Mayor Paul Coogan, and District Attorney Tom Quinn have expressed their condolences and praised the efforts of first responders. A family reunification center was established at St. Anne’s Hospital, and the Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

A 2023 compliance review of Gabriel House by “aging and independence” had previously found several areas of non-compliance, including issues with service plan documentation and employee health screening records. Investigators from the Fall River Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office continue to work to determine the exact cause of the fire, with a lengthy process of interviews expected.
