Sudan: Devastating Landslide Kills 1,000 in Marra Mountains Amid Darfur Conflict

A catastrophic landslide in Sudan’s remote Marra Mountains has claimed the lives of at least 1,000 people, according to reports from the rebel group The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army. The tragedy, triggered by days of relentless heavy rain, occurred on Sunday, leaving just one survivor and completely leveling the village of Tarasin.
The affected region in western Darfur has seen immense displacement, with over 800,000 individuals fleeing their homes since the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in 2023. Many of those seeking refuge from the war-torn North Darfur state had found temporary sanctuary in the Marra Mountains, making them particularly vulnerable to the natural disaster.
In the wake of the devastating event, The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance from the United Nations and other regional and international organizations to address the escalating crisis.
