Iconic Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge Destroyed by Wildfire
A fast-moving wildfire has tragically destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the park’s North Rim, park officials confirmed Sunday, July 13, 2025. The lodge, a beloved landmark and the sole lodging option within the North Rim, was consumed by flames from the Dragon Bravo Fire.
Superintendent Ed Keable confirmed that between 50 to 80 structures were lost, including the visitor center, gas station, a wastewater treatment plant, an administrative building, and various employee housing units. The Dragon Bravo Fire, which initially began as a controlled burn, rapidly escalated to 7.8 square miles (20 square kilometers) due to severe hot temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds.
While no injuries have been reported, the incident led to the evacuation of the North Rim last Thursday, July 10, including firefighters and hikers in the inner canyon. Concerns have also been raised about potential exposure to chlorine gas following the destruction of the treatment plant. Rafters on the Colorado River have been advised to bypass Phantom Ranch.
Meanwhile, another blaze, the White Sage Fire, continues to burn north of the Grand Canyon. While fire lines are reportedly holding in some areas, the fire is spreading rapidly to the east and north, fueled by grasses and dead trees, pushing towards the Vermilion Cliffs area.
