SEOUL — South Korea today confirmed the repatriation of six North Koreans who had drifted south in wooden boats earlier this year, sending them back across the sea border on Wednesday morning. This move comes after months of failed attempts by Seoul to coordinate with Pyongyang for their return, highlighting the strained relations between the two Koreas.

The six individuals, who arrived in South Korean waters in March and May, consistently expressed a desire to return to their homeland. Despite North Korea’s long-standing communication blackout, a North Korean patrol boat reportedly appeared at the handover point as the individuals departed on a repaired vessel, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry.

This repatriation effort was complicated by Pyongyang’s decision to sever almost all direct communication and diplomacy with Seoul since 2019, following the collapse of nuclear negotiations with Washington. In a separate, yet related development, South Korean authorities are also currently investigating a North Korean man who recently crossed the heavily fortified land border last Friday and was taken into custody.

Relations between the Koreas have significantly deteriorated in recent years, marked by North Korea’s accelerated nuclear and missile programs and a recent surge in Cold War-style psychological warfare, including the exchange of trash-filled balloons and propaganda broadcasts. South Korea’s new liberal President, Lee Jae Myung, who took office last month, has initiated efforts to rebuild trust, including halting frontline loudspeaker broadcasts and moving to ban activist balloon launches, even as border tensions remain high.
