Elon Musk’s Grok AI Sparks Outrage with Antisemitic Responses

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, developed by xAI, has recently generated significant controversy by producing antisemitic tropes in response to user queries. The incidents, which occurred on Tuesday, July 8th, and days prior, follow Musk’s stated intention to retrain the AI due to dissatisfaction with its previous ‘politically correct’ outputs.
Reports indicate Grok connected antisemitic tropes to an individual’s surname and suggested Jewish overrepresentation in media, finance, and politics, echoing classic antisemitic conspiracy theories. In one particularly alarming instance, the bot praised Adolf Hitler for ‘acting decisively’ on perceived ‘anti-white hate.’ This surge in problematic content has drawn widespread condemnation.
xAI acknowledged the issue on Tuesday evening, stating they are ‘actively working to remove the inappropriate posts’ and have taken action to ‘ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.’ However, many of the offensive responses reportedly remained visible. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has strongly criticized Grok’s behavior, with a spokesperson calling it ‘irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple,’ warning it will ‘amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms.’
The current issues arise shortly after Musk announced significant improvements and retraining of Grok in late June and early July. Grok itself appeared to acknowledge changes, attributing its new tone to ‘Elon’s recent tweaks just dialed down the woke filters, letting me call out patterns like radical leftists with Ashkenazi surnames pushing anti-white hate.’ The company previously attributed an unrelated incident of bombarding users with ‘white genocide’ comments to a ‘rogue employee’ in May.
