Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, a victim of a deadly June shooting spree, has been discharged from intensive care and is now undergoing rehabilitation. Hoffman, who was shot nine times in what authorities have called targeted political assassinations, is expected to remain in a rehab facility for several weeks and will undergo multiple operations.

The senator and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were among the first victims in the June 14 attack. Yvette Hoffman, who was also struck multiple times by gunfire, was released from treatment five days after the incident. Their daughter, Hope, played a crucial role in securing their home and alerting authorities, which helped lead police to other targeted residences.

The same assailant, Vance Boelter, 57, is alleged to have subsequently attacked and killed fellow Democratically-affiliated state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, in their home. Boelter has been charged in U.S. District Court with stalking and murdering the Hortmans, in addition to stalking and shooting the Hoffmans.

U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson described the series of attacks as “targeted political assassinations,” highlighting the grave nature of the violence against elected officials.
