An intensive search operation remains underway for at least 10 girls and one counselor who went missing following a historic flash flood event that struck central Texas summer camps on Friday, July 4th. The individuals are from Camp Mystic, a girls’ Christian summer camp located in western Kerr County, situated at a dangerous confluence of the South Fork Guadalupe River and Cypress Creek.

The devastating floods, described as a 1-in-100-year event, rapidly overwhelmed waterways in the Texas Hill Country after more than a summer’s worth of rain fell in just hours. While Camp La Junta, a nearby boys’ camp, announced all its attendees were safe and accounted for by Friday, the situation at Camp Mystic remains critical as of Sunday evening.

Authorities and waterway managers were aware that several camps along the Guadalupe River and its tributaries, including Camp Mystic, are located in areas known to be at high risk of flooding. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) data indicates that parts of Camp Mystic’s property overlap with regulatory floodways or areas with a significant annual chance of flooding.

The incident highlights the increasing frequency of extreme flooding events in Texas, which has already experienced multiple dangerous deluges this year. As rescue efforts continue, the community holds its breath for news regarding the missing campers and counselor.
