Devastating flash floods that swept across Texas over the Fourth of July weekend have claimed at least 80 lives, with many more still missing, according to officials. The catastrophic event saw record-breaking river rises and widespread destruction, particularly in Kerr County.

Among the confirmed fatalities is Chloe Childress, a counselor at Camp Mystic, who died during the severe flooding in Hunt, Texas. Childress, a recent graduate of The Kinkaid School and an incoming student at the University of Texas at Austin, is remembered by her community as a ‘loyal and beloved’ individual who led with empathy and built community.

Jonathan Eades, head of The Kinkaid School, shared that Childress ‘lost her life upholding this selfless and fierce commitment to others,’ highlighting her remarkable ability to make others feel seen and valued. During her high school years, Chloe was co-president of the honor council, ran varsity cross country, and founded a club dedicated to assisting senior citizens.

Kerr County has reported the highest number of casualties, with 68 people believed to be dead, including 28 children. At Camp Mystic, located on the banks of the Guadalupe River, at least 11 of its 750 young female campers and counselors, including Childress, tragically perished in the floodwaters. The Guadalupe River in Kerr County experienced an unprecedented rise of 26 feet in just 45 minutes, reaching its second-highest recorded height.
