HERRIMAN — A devastating traffic accident late Saturday night resulted in a vehicle plowing into two Herriman businesses, igniting a significant explosion and injuring three individuals. The incident, centered at the intersection of 13400 South and 5200 West, severely impacted a Jimmy John’s and a Domino’s location.

According to Riverton Police Information Officer Josh Lee, three people were transported to the hospital with various injuries. Investigations suggest multiple vehicles were involved in an initial collision, causing at least one to strike the building. This impact reportedly ruptured a gas line, leading to a massive fire, as confirmed by a Unified Fire public information officer on X.

Unified Fire Authority praised two courageous bystanders who risked their lives to rescue the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle moments before it became fully engulfed in flames. Over 60 firefighters from Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City, and Sandy departments swiftly responded to the chaotic scene. No firefighters or police personnel were injured during the extensive operation.

The Herriman Police Department issued an emergency alert around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, urging residents near 5100 West and 13400 South, specifically Terra Cruz Lane and Parasol Lane, to evacuate due to concerns of a gas leak. All evacuation orders were lifted just after 1:00 a.m. Sunday. Police confirmed that 13400 South remained closed in both directions until further notice as authorities from Herriman Police, Unified Fire Authority, and Riverton Police Department coordinated their efforts.

Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the tragedy on 134th South tonight. To those involved in the accident, to those businesses affected by the fire, and to the employees that were on scene…we are thinking of you!” He also extended gratitude to the first responders and residents who offered assistance.
