Russell Crowe Reflects on Regrets and Defends Superhero Film Process Amidst Dakota Johnson’s ‘Madame Web’ Criticism

Veteran actor Russell Crowe, soon to be seen in Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’, recently offered candid reflections on his past mistakes and staunchly defended the intricate process behind superhero blockbusters, seemingly in response to Dakota Johnson’s highly publicized remarks regarding ‘Madame Web’.

In a revealing interview with GQ, the 60-year-old Oscar winner dismissed the notion of living without regret. “I’ve got a shit ton of regrets. An angry word, an overreaction, a missed opportunity for friendship — lots of things like that,” Crowe admitted, viewing these as “badges of honor” that fuel introspection and personal growth.

Crowe also weighed in on Johnson’s assessment that ‘Madame Web’ felt “made by committee,” pushing back on actors expecting profound artistic fulfillment from genre films. “You’re telling me you signed up for a Marvel movie, and some f***ing universe for cartoon characters … and you didn’t get enough pathos?” he quipped, emphasizing the large-scale, industrial nature of such productions. He drew on his own experiences with DC’s ‘Man of Steel’ and Marvel’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, stating these are “jobs” where actors play their roles within a “gigantic machine.”

While acknowledging the challenges of working in a bluescreen environment, Crowe refrained from directly criticizing Johnson, but questioned whether her negative experience could be generalized to the entire Marvel process. He highlighted his positive experiences on ‘Thor’ with Taika Waititi and on ‘Kraven’ with J.C. Chandor, praising the genius of many directors in the genre. Johnson had previously voiced her disappointment with ‘Madame Web’, describing it as a “real learning experience” and lamenting how committee decisions can stifle art in filmmaking.
