Two US aid workers with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) were reportedly injured in an attack on Saturday at an aid distribution center in Khan Younis. The GHF, which blames Hamas for the incident, stated the workers are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment. This attack highlights the volatile environment for humanitarian efforts as the region grapples with ongoing violence and delicate ceasefire negotiations.

The GHF, launched in May to distribute aid, has faced significant criticism for its operational model, which has seen hundreds of Palestinians killed while attempting to collect food. Israel defends the system as a measure to prevent aid from reaching Hamas.

Concurrently, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported 32 Palestinians killed in Israeli military operations on Saturday, contributing to at least 70 fatalities in the last 24 hours. Gaza’s health ministry indicates the conflict’s total death toll has now exceeded 57,338.

The assault on aid personnel comes as Hamas signals readiness for further talks on a US-backed ceasefire proposal. On Friday, Hamas reportedly sought amendments to the draft, including a US guarantee against renewed hostilities post-ceasefire and the replacement of GHF operations with UN-led aid distribution, demands previously rejected by Israel. The conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks, continues with approximately 50 Israeli hostages still believed to be held in Gaza.
