Rite Aid has officially ceased all retail operations, confirming the closure of its remaining physical locations. A message on the U.S. pharmacy chain’s website now states, “All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support.” This marks the final chapter for the company, which has been a staple in communities for decades.

The comprehensive shutdown follows a series of financial challenges, including a significant bankruptcy filing in October 2023, which was the second such filing in two years. The restructuring efforts aimed to reduce the company’s substantial debt and resolve ongoing litigation, particularly claims related to opioid prescriptions. Since October 2023, over 520 Rite Aid pharmacies, roughly a quarter of its total at the time, have progressively closed down.

Amidst its financial woes, Rite Aid faced a complaint from the Justice Department in March 2023, accusing it of violating the False Claims Act and the Controlled Substances Act. The allegations centered on the filling of unlawful prescriptions for controlled substances like oxycodone and fentanyl, and a failure to address internal warnings. The company’s website now primarily serves as a resource for former customers seeking new pharmacy options and access to their historical records.
