HUNT, Texas – A desperate search is underway for at least 20 children reported missing after catastrophic flash flooding deluged Camp Mystic, a historic Christian summer camp for girls in the Texas Hill Country, early Friday. The 99-year-old institution, which was hosting approximately 750 campers this week, was overwhelmed by the rapidly rising waters of the Guadalupe River.

The devastating floods have claimed at least 24 lives across the Texas Hill Country. While official identities of the deceased and missing have yet to be released, numerous families have shared on local social media groups that they’ve received distressing calls from safety officials regarding their daughters’ unconfirmed whereabouts.

Camp Mystic, founded in 1926 and run by the same family for generations, emailed parents stating that children are accounted for unless they have been contacted directly. The camp, known for fostering spiritual growth and self-esteem in a “wholesome Christian atmosphere,” operates two sites along the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas.

The sudden onslaught of water began around 4 a.m. Friday, following heavy overnight rainfall. Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice confirmed the rapidity of the event, stating officials had no time to issue evacuation orders. “This happened within less than a two-hour span,” Rice explained.

Reports indicate bodies have been recovered from vehicles swept away by the torrent. While the Guadalupe River crested in Kerrville and Comfort by Friday evening, downstream areas, including near Spring Branch, are still bracing for peak flood levels expected early Saturday, with the National Weather Service projecting a moderate flood stage crest of 37.2 feet.
