Copenhagen is on high alert as Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has declared Europe to be in the midst of a “hybrid war,” describing the current security situation as the most perilous since World War II. This declaration follows repeated unidentified drone spottings over Danish airspace, which officials deem a serious security risk.

While the Danish government has not officially named the perpetrators, Prime Minister Frederiksen unequivocally stated, “There is only one country willing to threaten us and it is Russia, and therefore we need a very strong answer back.” The Danish Defence Intelligence Service corroborated this sentiment on Friday, asserting that Russia is exerting pressure on Denmark through “hybrid warfare,” employing political, economic, information, and military tactics below the threshold of armed conflict.

In response to the escalating threat, the United States and other NATO allies have swiftly deployed military, law enforcement, and technical resources to Denmark this week. This rapid mobilization aims to bolster security, particularly around high-level European meetings held in Copenhagen.

The recent airspace incursions, which began on September 22, have deeply unsettled the Danish public. Citizens are reportedly anxious, with many revisiting and enacting emergency preparedness plans. Stores have seen a surge in demand for survival supplies, including water containers, canned goods, and camping equipment, as Danes take seriously the long-standing government advice to stock provisions for at least three days without essential services.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard has warned that this heightened state of alert is Denmark’s “new reality.” As European nations, staunch supporters of Ukraine against Russia’s full-scale invasion, remain vigilant, the Kremlin denies any plans to invade NATO countries, with President Vladimir Putin accusing Europe of “whipping up hysteria.” However, the ongoing drone incidents and the subsequent official responses underscore a profound shift in Denmark’s security landscape.
