Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged the ‘full force of law’ following a shocking arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne on Friday night. The incident, which saw an individual pour liquid on the front door and ignite it, occurred while approximately 20 people were inside for dinner. Fortunately, all occupants were safely evacuated without injury.

Police are actively investigating the incident and are exploring potential links to a separate attack on a Jewish-owned restaurant in the city’s business district on the same evening. This comes amidst a concerning surge in antisemitic incidents across Australia, exacerbated by global tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Prime Minister Albanese unequivocally condemned the attack on the East Melbourne synagogue, stating, “Antisemitism has no place in Australia. Those responsible for these shocking acts must face the full force of the law.” His government has previously taken steps to combat hate crimes, including appointing a special envoy and enacting tougher laws. Community leaders, including Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, described these events as a “severe escalation directed towards our community,” underscoring the urgency of the situation.
