Microsoft is reportedly on the cusp of introducing a free, ad-supported tier for its Xbox Cloud Gaming service, a move that could significantly broaden access to its extensive game library. This development follows the company’s recent expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming access across all Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

According to a report from Tom Warren at The Verge, internal testing is currently underway for this ad-supported streaming model. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans indicate that employees are already playing select titles without requiring a Game Pass subscription, supported by advertising.

The upcoming free tier is expected to focus on specific offerings, including eligible ‘Stream Your Own Game’ titles, Free Play Days selections, and the Xbox Retro Classics collection. Initial tests reportedly feature two minutes of preroll ads before gameplay, along with session limits of one hour, capped at five hours per month. However, The Verge notes that these limitations are subject to change before public release.

This new ad-supported option is anticipated to roll out via a public beta soon, with a full launch expected in the coming months. It will reportedly be accessible across multiple platforms, including PC, web browsers, consoles, and handheld devices, making cloud gaming more widely available than ever before.
