A devastating fireworks explosion in Pacoima on Thursday night has resulted in one confirmed fatality and the destruction of four homes, authorities announced Friday morning. The incident, which saw more than 130 firefighters battle a blaze fueled by exploding fireworks, has prompted a multi-agency investigation into its cause and origin.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to the scene near 12933 W. Corcoran St. around 9 p.m. Thursday, where three one-story homes were already engulfed in flames, with fireworks actively detonating. The intense conditions forced fire crews to adopt a defensive posture to protect personnel from further explosions. The fire quickly escalated to a “major emergency,” eventually spreading to a fourth residence and a vehicle before being knocked down around 10 p.m.

Amidst the chaos, a 33-year-old woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition, and an injured dog received emergency veterinary care. Another 68-year-old woman declined medical transport for smoke inhalation. The aftermath saw the deployment of LAFD’s arson and hazmat teams, the LAPD bomb squad, and the Mayor’s Crisis Team to provide support to displaced residents. Utility companies, including the gas company and LADWP, were also called to address leaks and downed power lines.

This tragic event is one of several serious fireworks-related incidents reported across California leading up to and during the Fourth of July holiday. Earlier detonations included a fatal explosion in Simi Valley and another in the Bay Area that critically injured two people. Additionally, seven workers remain missing following a massive warehouse explosion in Esparto, near Sacramento, on Tuesday night.

As investigations continue into the Pacoima incident, officials are reiterating warnings about the extreme dangers of illegal fireworks. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez emphasized the “selfish and thoughtless use of fireworks” can be deadly, while the LAFD urged residents to attend professional displays and soak any personal fireworks in water to render them inert, prioritizing community safety.
