Melbourne, Australia – Trainee surgeon Ryan Cho, accused of secretly recording hundreds of medical colleagues in hospital restrooms, was released on bail Friday following a decision by the Victoria state Supreme Court. Cho, 28, faces potentially around 500 charges related to an alleged 4,500 intimate videos secretly recorded with phones since 2021.

Justice James Elliott ruled for Cho’s release under strict conditions, including that he reside with his parents, who relocated from Singapore to Melbourne ahead of his release. A $50,000 Australian dollar ($32,000) surety was also required from his parents. Cho has surrendered his Singapore passport, and the judge noted he had no criminal ties that could aid his escape, despite prosecutors’ concerns about flight risk.

Police allege Cho recorded intimate images of at least 460 women, primarily in staff restrooms at Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center, and Royal Melbourne Hospital. While initially facing six charges, another 127 were added Thursday, with no pleas yet entered. The judge highlighted that there is no allegation Cho disseminated the images.
