Tragedy struck in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park when two female tourists were killed by an elephant during a walking safari. The victims have been identified as 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the U.K. and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand.

According to Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, the women were attacked by a female elephant that was accompanied by a calf. Safari guides attempted to deter the charging elephant by firing shots, wounding the animal, but were unable to prevent the fatal assault. Both women died at the scene.

The incident occurred approximately 370 miles from Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. Elephants, particularly females with calves, are known to be highly protective and can react aggressively to perceived threats. This incident follows similar tragedies in Zambia, where two American female tourists were killed in separate elephant encounters last year while on safari vehicles.
