Two Tourists Killed in Fatal Elephant Attack at Zambian National Park

Tragedy struck South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia yesterday when two elderly female tourists were killed by an elephant during a walking safari. The victims, identified by Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, were 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the U.K. and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand.
The fatal incident occurred when a female elephant, accompanied by her calf, charged the group. Safari guides accompanying the tourists attempted to deter the aggressive animal by firing shots, wounding the elephant, but were tragically unable to prevent the attack. Both women died at the scene.
The park, located approximately 600 kilometers (370 miles) from Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, is a popular safari destination. Authorities note that female elephants are highly protective of their calves and can react aggressively to perceived threats, underscoring the inherent dangers of wildlife encounters in their natural habitat.
