Capcom has pulled back the curtain on the evolving vision for its upcoming title, Resident Evil: Requiem, confirming that early ambitions for an open-world, online experience were ultimately scrapped. In a recent developer diary video and during yesterday’s Capcom Spotlight 2025 broadcast, director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masachika Kawata revealed the decision to pivot back to the franchise’s single-player horror roots, citing fan expectations.

The developers confirmed Requiem will launch next year as a strictly single-player, offline game, abandoning the action-heavy, multi-protagonist concepts explored in early development. “We realized that it wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play,” Kawata stated, explaining the return to the drawing board.

Art director Tomonori Takano also elaborated on the game’s setting, confirming a deliberate shift to urban environments, including the iconic Raccoon City. This marks a departure from recent titles like Resident Evil 7 and Village, which favored rural backdrops. While FBI agent Grace Ashcroft is confirmed as a protagonist, speculation continues regarding the potential inclusion of fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy, despite Nakanishi’s recent comments suggesting he’d be a “bad match for horror.”
