A silent threat is spreading across the United States. Measles, a disease declared eliminated in 2000, is experiencing its worst resurgence in over two decades, with nearly 1200 confirmed cases reported across 34 states and tragically, three deaths.

The victims? Two school-aged children in Texas and an adult in New Mexico – all unvaccinated. This stark reality underscores a critical issue: vaccination rates are plummeting. While two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective, rates have dropped from 95% in 2019 to 92% in 2023, leaving many vulnerable.

The impact is devastating. In Texas, nearly half the state’s counties report kindergarten vaccination rates below the crucial 95% threshold, with some areas as low as 82%. This leaves children unprotected and fuels the spread of this highly contagious virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights that a staggering 97% of recent US measles cases were in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. Only 3% were in fully vaccinated people, demonstrating the vaccine’s effectiveness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes part of this crisis to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which hampered vaccination efforts globally. Millions of children are now at risk of preventable diseases.

Measles, also known as rubeola, is characterized by fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye, and a distinctive rash. It spreads easily through respiratory droplets, surviving for hours in the air or on surfaces.

What can you do? The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for optimal protection. If you’re unvaccinated, get vaccinated now. If you suspect measles, isolate yourself for four days after the rash appears, practice rigorous hand hygiene, wear a mask, and avoid sharing personal items. Protecting yourself and others is crucial in stemming this resurgence.
