Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has reportedly detailed harsh conditions and alleged mistreatment during her detention by Israeli forces, following the interception of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza. According to correspondence seen by The Guardian, Thunberg informed Swedish officials that she was held in a bedbug-infested cell, deprived of adequate food and water, and forced to endure prolonged periods on hard surfaces.

The allegations surfaced after Thunberg was among 437 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers aboard the Global Sumud flotilla, a coalition of over 40 vessels attempting to breach Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted all boats between Thursday and Friday, arresting every crew member onboard. Most detainees are currently held at Ketziot, a high-security prison in the Negev desert.

Further alarming claims include reports from another detainee who allegedly witnessed Thunberg being forced to hold unidentified flags while photographs were taken. This account was reportedly corroborated by at least two other released flotilla members, with one Turkish activist claiming Thunberg was “dragged by her hair, beaten, and forced to kiss the Israeli flag.” An Italian journalist described Thunberg being “wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy.”

The Swedish foreign ministry confirmed embassy officials met with Thunberg, who reported dehydration and rashes she suspected were from bedbugs. The ministry has since stressed the importance of swift processing, adequate provisions, and access to legal counsel for all detained Swedes.

Concerns over the treatment of detainees have also been raised by human rights organizations. Lawyers from the NGO Adalah stated that the rights of crew members have been “systematically violated,” citing denials of water, sanitation, medication, and immediate legal access. Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, was filmed during the incident calling the activists “terrorists.”

The Israeli embassy has vehemently denied all allegations, stating they are “complete lies.” The embassy affirmed that all detainees were provided with water, food, and toilets, and had full access to legal counsel and medical care, asserting Israel’s commitment to upholding rights and dignity in accordance with international standards. This marks Thunberg’s second detention this year in connection with Gaza aid flotillas.
