Denmark has initiated an immediate ban on all civilian drone flights across its airspace, effective from Monday, September 29, through Friday, October 3. This decisive action follows a surge in suspicious drone activity, including multiple sightings near military installations and disruptions that forced the temporary closure of Copenhagen Airport and other facilities earlier this week.

The ban is a critical security measure as the Nordic nation prepares to host a series of high-stakes European gatherings. Denmark, holding the rotating European Council presidency, will welcome EU leaders on Wednesday, October 1, followed by a summit of the 47-member European Political Community on Thursday, October 2. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the need to ensure optimal working conditions for armed forces and police responsible for security during these pivotal events.

Danish authorities have characterized the drone incursions as a potential “hybrid attack,” though they have refrained from definitively naming the perpetrator. However, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has identified Russia as a primary threat to European security, a sentiment echoed by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte regarding the possibility of Russian involvement. Russia’s embassy in Denmark has denied these allegations. To bolster surveillance and defense, a German air defense frigate arrived in Copenhagen on Sunday. The comprehensive ban aims to mitigate any further security risks during this sensitive period for European diplomacy.
