Apple has responded to growing reports of scratches appearing on the backside of its new iPhone 17 Pro models. The company attributes these marks not to scratches, but to ‘material transfer’ from worn MagSafe stands used in retail stores.

According to Apple’s statement to 9to5Mac, these marks, primarily observed on display units, are the result of residue from MagSafe accessories and can reportedly be cleaned off. Apple also suggested that this phenomenon could affect older iPhone models. However, independent confirmation of the removability of these marks is pending, as Apple has not yet responded to inquiries from other tech outlets.

Despite Apple’s explanation, user reports, including observations by a Mashable employee, indicate that the marks are indeed visible, particularly around the MagSafe contact area on blue and orange iPhone 17 Pro models. While Apple’s theory regarding MagSafe stands lends some credibility to the location of these marks, the definitive cause and solution remain under scrutiny. Until further clarity emerges, users of the new iPhone 17 Pro may consider utilizing a protective case.
