A masked gunman opened fire on Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his family early Saturday morning in what authorities are calling a politically motivated assassination attempt. The attacker, identified as Vance Luther Boelter, fired multiple shots, striking Senator Hoffman six times and his wife, Yvette, five times.

Yvette Hoffman acted heroically, using her body as a shield to protect their adult daughter, Hope, who was unharmed. Both Senator and Mrs. Hoffman underwent surgery and are reported to be in stable condition.

Boelter is also suspected of fatally shooting former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home shortly after the attack on the Hoffmans. A “manifesto” found at the scene contained a list of approximately 70 politicians, including Governor Tim Walz, along with abortion providers and clinics. The list suggests a potential motive rooted in extreme anti-abortion views.

Boelter’s wife was detained for questioning. The incident highlights a concerning escalation of political violence and underscores the need for enhanced security measures for public officials.
