Spotify has rolled out a significant update to its free tier, allowing ad-supported mobile users to pick and play specific tracks within any playlist or album, a major departure from its long-standing shuffle-only model. The change, which went live globally on September 15, aims to enhance the user experience and drive engagement.

Beyond lifting the shuffle restriction, Spotify has introduced two additional on-demand features for free users: ‘Search & Play’ enables listeners to search for and instantly play individual songs, while ‘Share & Play’ allows immediate playback of tracks shared by friends or artists via social media. These updates are designed to address user frustrations and cater to modern media consumption habits, particularly among younger audiences.

While free users gain more control, some limitations remain, including a daily cap on on-demand minutes and queuing exclusive to Premium subscribers. Spotify’s strategic move is intended to boost free user retention, increase ad revenues, and ultimately encourage conversion to its Premium service, where 60% of subscribers originate from the free tier. This marks the biggest adjustment to Spotify’s free offering in nearly six years, signaling a renewed focus on its freemium growth strategy.
