President Donald Trump arrived at the United Nations General Assembly this week facing a stark reality: his administration stands increasingly isolated on the Israel-Hamas war and the pathway to a Palestinian state. As he prepares to deliver his first address of a second term to global leaders on Tuesday, the US position is at odds with a significant majority of UN member nations, including key allies.

The growing divide was underscored by a high-level two-state solution conference co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia on Monday, backed by 142 of 193 UN Member States. The United States notably declined to participate, having also voted against the General Assembly resolution endorsing the gathering. During the conference, French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to announce France’s recognition of a Palestinian state, a move anticipated to be followed by the UK, Canada, Australia, and Belgium in the coming days.

Despite this mounting international pressure, the Trump administration remains defiant. President Trump, speaking alongside the British Prime Minister last week, termed the UK’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state as “one of our few disagreements.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the administration’s stance on Monday, arguing that such unilateral declarations are “counterproductive” and have “emboldened Hamas,” thereby undermining peace efforts.

Further highlighting the administration’s hardline approach, the US has taken the unprecedented step of denying visas to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and other PA and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) members, effectively preventing high-level Palestinian representation at the UN gathering. This move has drawn criticism, with former US Ambassador Jake Walles noting the necessity of dialogue with Abbas as the international face of the Palestinians.

The US unwavering support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government comes as the Israel-Hamas conflict nears its two-year mark. Netanyahu has publicly rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state, and there are concerns of potential further annexation announcements by Israel. Last Thursday, the US also vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” drawing global condemnation and further solidifying its isolated position on the conflict.
