An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon on Sunday tragically claimed the lives of five people, including four US citizens—a father and his three young children, according to the Lebanese government. The incident has triggered immediate international condemnation and urgent pleas for accountability.

The Israeli military confirmed it had targeted and eliminated a Hezbollah operative in the southern town of Bint Jbeil, while acknowledging that “several uninvolved civilians” were also killed in the strike. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expressed regret for any harm to non-combatants and stated the incident is currently under review.

Lebanon’s Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri, identified the deceased father and his three children as US nationals. Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji reported that the mother of the American family was critically injured and remains in a life-threatening condition. Lebanese state news agency NNA detailed that a drone launched two missiles, striking a motorcycle and a Mercedes car, where the family was traveling. The motorcyclist, reportedly the intended target, also died.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attack as a “massacre” against civilians, interpreting it as an act of intimidation aimed at residents returning to their villages in the south. He called upon the international community to unequivocally condemn Israel for its persistent violations of international law and resolutions.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) voiced profound shock and outrage over the killing of the three children, reiterating that “attacks on children are unconscionable” and demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities to ensure the protection of every child. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, attending the UN General Assembly in New York, appealed to global leaders to intervene, emphasizing, “There can be no peace over the blood of our children.” This strike occurs despite a US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah established in November last year.
