British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed Sunday that the United Kingdom has formally recognized a Palestinian state, a significant diplomatic move made despite vociferous opposition from the United States and Israel. This announcement follows similar recognitions by Canada and Australia.

Starmer stated the decision is intended “to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis.” While largely symbolic, it marks a historic moment given the U.K.’s historical role in the region. The announcement was widely anticipated, as Starmer had indicated in July that the U.K. would recognize Palestine if Israel did not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, allow U.N. aid, and take steps toward lasting peace.

More than 140 countries have already recognized a Palestinian state, with additional recognitions, including from France, expected at the U.N. General Assembly this week. The U.K.’s decision comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his disapproval during a state visit.

Critics, including the U.S. and Israeli government, have condemned the move, arguing it rewards Hamas and terrorism and is an empty gesture given the division of Palestinian territories. Starmer has insisted that Hamas will have no future governance role and must release Israeli hostages from the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy highlighted the move as an effort to address a “historical injustice” and maintain the viability of a two-state solution. This shift in U.K. policy, which traditionally tied recognition to a peace plan, reflects growing concerns that such a solution is becoming impossible due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank.
