Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, tragically received the bodies of his brother and five other family members while on duty this past weekend. An Israeli airstrike struck his family home in the Al Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City, where multiple generations resided.

“This is the family home where we live. My brother, two of my brother’s sons, my nephew’s wife, and two of their children were martyred,” Abu Salmiya told CNN. The strike killed six and injured seven, including his sister, niece, and nephews. CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment regarding the target.

A video shared by Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, Director General of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, showed a grief-stricken Abu Salmiya kneeling beside his family members, still in his scrubs. Al-Bursh expressed prayers for the doctor’s strength and patience.

Gaza’s civil defense reported rescuing four injured and recovering three bodies from the site, with one person still missing under the rubble. This latest assault comes as international outcry intensifies over Israel’s efforts to capture Gaza City, prompting mass displacement and the demolition of high-rise buildings. Israel maintains the city is a Hamas stronghold.

Hamas’s military wing recently issued an image of remaining Israeli hostages, warning that the incursion into Gaza City jeopardizes any chance of their release. The Palestinian health ministry reports over 65,200 Palestinian casualties in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The United Nations and other bodies warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with parts of Gaza officially declared under famine. This week, an independent UN inquiry concluded for the first time that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a claim Israel firmly denies.
