A significant cyberattack has crippled check-in and boarding systems at several major European airports today, Saturday, September 20, causing widespread disruptions and flight delays. The attack, which began Friday night, has forced airports to resort to manual check-in processes, impacting thousands of travelers.

Brussels Airport reported a ‘large impact’ on its flight schedules, with nine flights canceled, four redirected, and 15 experiencing delays of over an hour by mid-morning. Berlin’s Brandenburg and London’s Heathrow airports also confirmed disruptions, though Heathrow stated its impact has been ‘minimal’ with no direct flight cancellations.

The incident targets Collins Aerospace, a key provider of check-in and boarding systems, specifically its MUSE (Multi-User System Environment) software. Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX Corp., has acknowledged a ‘cyber-related disruption’ and is actively working to restore full functionality. Despite the initial chaos, the company noted that the impact is limited to electronic check-in and baggage drop, which can be mitigated through manual operations.

Airports are advising all travelers to check their flight status directly with their airlines before heading to the airport and have apologized for the inconvenience.
