Tropical Storm Gabrielle has officially formed in the central Atlantic Ocean, becoming the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The system, which developed Wednesday morning, is currently expected to remain over open waters for the next several days, with no immediate land hazards warned.

However, forecasters are closely monitoring Gabrielle as it shows potential to intensify into a low-grade hurricane over the upcoming weekend. CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan’s projections indicate the storm’s current track will carry it north of the Caribbean, but it could reach Bermuda as early as next week if it continues to strengthen.

As of Wednesday morning, Gabrielle’s maximum sustained winds were recorded at 45 mph, just above the threshold for a tropical storm. It rapidly evolved from a tropical depression earlier the same day, approximately 1,000 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, tracking northwest at 22 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center notes that while the storm’s path remains “highly uncertain” due to its poorly defined center, its potential to strengthen into a hurricane by Sunday is a key concern.

Gabrielle’s formation comes approximately one week after the historical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Despite initial predictions for a busier-than-average season, activity has been quieter than anticipated so far, with Gabrielle being only the seventh named storm and only one prior storm (Chantal) making landfall.
