Former CDC Director Susan Monarez delivered explosive testimony before a Senate committee yesterday, alleging she was ousted last month for refusing Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s demands for “blanket approval” on vaccine recommendations and to fire career scientists. Monarez recounted a “tense” late August meeting where Kennedy reportedly insisted the “childhood vaccine schedule would be changing starting in September” and that she “needed to be on board.”

Monarez stated her refusal to “replace evidence with ideology” led to her dismissal, countering Kennedy’s claims that she was untrustworthy. The hearing highlighted the ongoing turbulence at the CDC, with former chief medical officer Dr. Deb Houry also testifying about resigning due to Kennedy’s alleged censorship and politicization of science.

The contentious testimony comes just hours before the vaccine advisory committee is set to re-evaluate key vaccine schedules, including for hepatitis B, MMRV, and COVID-19, today in Atlanta. Kennedy previously fired the entire 17-member Advisory Panel on Immunization Practices in June and appointed new members, many critical of vaccines.
