The Los Angeles Chargers delivered a commanding 20-9 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football, spoiling head coach Pete Carroll’s 74th birthday and marking him as the oldest head coach in NFL history. The Chargers’ victory was fueled by a stellar performance from quarterback Justin Herbert and a suffocating defense that capitalized on Raiders’ turnovers.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert showcased precision and power, connecting for two touchdowns and totaling 242 yards on 19 of 27 passing. His connection with wide receiver Quentin Johnston was particularly potent, highlighted by a 60-yard touchdown bomb, as Johnston finished with five catches for 79 yards and both scores. Veteran Keenan Allen also contributed a touchdown reception.

On the other side, Raiders quarterback Geno Smith endured a challenging night, throwing three interceptions and struggling under pressure. His 180 yards on 24 of 43 passing were marred by turnovers, contributing significantly to the Raiders’ offensive struggles, which included three sacks. Rookies Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty had limited impact despite being key offensive pieces.

The Chargers’ defense played a pivotal role, creating havoc from the opening whistle with an interception on Smith’s first throw and winning the turnover battle 3-1. With this win, the Chargers advance to a 2-0 record, while the Raiders drop to 1-1. Looking ahead to Week 3, the Chargers will host the Denver Broncos, and the Raiders will travel to face the Washington Commanders.
