President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning, threatening to declare a new national emergency and federalize Washington D.C. This comes after Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the city’s police would cease cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing concerns over alleged racial profiling during arrests.

The latest threat escalates an ongoing dispute over federal authority in the capital. Trump previously imposed a 30-day emergency declaration on August 11, which saw the deployment of federal officers and National Guard troops – a move widely criticized as federal overreach, despite being framed as a crackdown on crime and homelessness. Although that declaration has expired, over 2,000 National Guard troops, some reportedly from Republican-run states, continue to patrol the district.

Mayor Bowser’s executive order, issued earlier this month, mandates cooperation between local law enforcement and federal agencies but explicitly excludes ICE. Trump, blaming “Radical Left Democrats” for Bowser’s stance, warned that a halt in ICE cooperation would lead to “Crime [coming] roaring back.” He assured D.C. residents and businesses, “I AM WITH YOU, AND WON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!” The city’s violent crime rate is currently at a 30-year low, notably lower than many red states.
