A Mississippi deacon, Eddie Shed, was fatally shot Saturday after an Easter egg hunt hosted by his church in Gulfport. Shed, who also served as the head of security for Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, was killed while attempting to de-escalate a child custody dispute that erupted into gunfire at Jack and Florence Goldin Park.

According to Gulfport Police, 24-year-old Tyran Deion Gable of Saucier, Mississippi, allegedly brandished a firearm and opened fire, striking Shed and another individual. Witnesses told WLOX that Shed intervened to protect children in the vicinity. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other injured person was airlifted to an out-of-state hospital. Gable, who also sustained gunshot wounds, was taken to a local hospital by responding officers and now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, held without bond for the murder charge.

Empowerment Ministries Christian Center has lauded Deacon Shed for his valor, with Pastor Gregg Magee stating his actions “ultimately saved others from harm.” The church has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support Shed’s wife, Doris, and their three children, raising approximately $4,700 towards a $25,000 goal as of Monday morning.
