Authorities have arrested and identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 11, 2025. Robinson was taken into custody in St. George, Utah, on Friday, September 12, following a swift investigation.

The breakthrough in the case came when Robinson’s father recognized him in photographs distributed by law enforcement. After being urged by his father to surrender, Robinson initially resisted but later agreed, leading to his arrest facilitated by a youth pastor who also served as a U.S. Marshals task force officer. Utah Governor Spencer Cox publicly thanked Robinson’s family for their cooperation.

New details from the ongoing investigation reveal Robinson’s alleged planning. Surveillance footage shows him arriving on campus, changing into dark clothing before the shooting, and then changing back afterward. Law enforcement also uncovered messages between Robinson and his roommate discussing the retrieval of a unique, older model Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt-action rifle from a drop point, along with mentions of engraving bullets.

Investigators recovered three unfired casings from the scene with distinct engravings, including anti-fascist sentiments and a humorous insult. Governor Cox noted that Robinson had become “more political in recent years” and had discussed his dislike for Kirk’s viewpoints with a family member prior to the event. Robinson, who is not a UVU student but attends Dixie Technical College, was apprehended within 33 hours of the shooting.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the ongoing nature of the investigation, highlighting the rapid response of law enforcement. The weapon, found discarded in a wooded area near the university, is undergoing forensic analysis, along with other evidence like footwear impressions and a palm print.
