At least six historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) initiated lockdowns and issued campus alerts today after receiving potential threats. Institutions including Alabama State University, Virginia State University, Hampton University, Southern University, and Clark Atlanta University halted activities as a precautionary measure.

Spelman College also implemented shelter-in-place protocols due to its proximity to Clark Atlanta. The FBI confirmed it is aware of “hoax threat calls” targeting several historically Black institutions, stating it takes these threats seriously despite no current information indicating a credible threat.

Hampton University canceled all nonessential activities for the remainder of today and tomorrow. Virginia State University and Southern University in Louisiana also confirmed lockdowns, with Southern University extending class and activity cancellations through the weekend. The Congressional Black Caucus condemned the threats, calling them a “chilling reminder of the relentless racism and extremism” targeting Black communities and urged swift FBI and Department of Justice investigation.

Bethune-Cookman University in Florida also went on lockdown. These incidents follow a history of threats against HBCUs, including a wave of bomb threats in 2022 that were later attributed to a juvenile. While no injuries have been reported in the current incidents, and officials have not linked them to recent high-profile events, campuses remain vigilant.
