Hawaii is currently under a state of emergency as the islands prepare for the potential impacts of Hurricane Kiko, which is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm by early next week. Acting Governor Sylvia Luke issued the emergency proclamation on Friday, activating critical measures and resources statewide to protect public health and safety.

As of Saturday afternoon, Hurricane Kiko had weakened to a Category 3 storm, churning approximately 1,000 miles from Hawaii in the eastern Pacific. Forecasters predict a continued weakening trend over the next 24-48 hours as the storm encounters cooler ocean temperatures and dry air. While the storm is expected to pass north of Hawaii, indirect impacts are a significant concern.

Swells from Kiko are anticipated to begin reaching the Big Island and Maui later today, Sunday, September 7, 2025. These swells are expected to build, peaking along east-facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands early to mid-next week, potentially generating dangerous surf and rip currents. Tropical storm-force winds, heavy rainfall, and high surf could begin affecting parts of the state as early as Monday, September 8, 2025.

The emergency proclamation authorizes the Hawaii National Guard to assist civilian authorities, directs state agencies to coordinate response efforts, and activates the Major Disaster Fund. Governor Luke urged residents and visitors to monitor official updates, follow guidance, and ensure emergency supplies are on hand. The disaster emergency relief period is set to continue through September 19, facilitating expedited emergency response and recovery activities.
