In a significant move to bolster public health, Hawaii has officially joined the West Coast Health Alliance, uniting with California, Oregon, and Washington. This coalition aims to provide residents with consistent, science-based immunization recommendations, free from political influence.

The announcement comes shortly after the Alliance’s launch, solidifying a shared commitment among the four states to safeguard public health. Governors Ferguson, Newsom, and Kotek, along with Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green, M.D., emphasized the importance of upholding scientific integrity in public health decisions. Governor Green highlighted Hawaii’s prior success with high vaccination rates and low mortality, attributing it to a science-first approach.

The Alliance states are dedicated to ensuring public health policies are guided by safety, efficacy, transparency, access, and trust. They will coordinate health guidelines by aligning immunization recommendations from respected national medical organizations, providing residents with reliable information regardless of shifting federal actions.

This initiative also addresses concerns about recent changes at the CDC, including what the Alliance states describe as reduced transparency and the sidelining of advisory bodies. In June, Washington, California, and Oregon condemned the removal of all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, reaffirming their commitment to science-driven decision-making to protect their communities.
