The Trump administration has officially opened a new, controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility, dubbed ‘Camp 57,’ within Louisiana’s infamous Angola State Penitentiary. The announcement was made yesterday by a high-profile delegation including US Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan, and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry during a press conference near the site.

Designed to house over 400 undocumented migrants accused of committing crimes, Camp 57 is located within the country’s largest maximum-security prison, the 18,000-acre Louisiana State Penitentiary. Governor Landry confirmed that half of the facility’s capacity is expected to be filled by the end of September. Administration officials, including Secretary Noem, stated that Camp 57 is specifically intended for the ‘worst of the worst’ and ‘most dangerous of criminals,’ signaling a significant move in the Trump administration’s ongoing campaigns against illegal immigration and violent crime.

The facility’s name, ‘Camp 57,’ is a nod to Governor Landry, the state’s 57th governor, and repurposes an existing, unused structure within the prison grounds. Secretary Noem explicitly stated that Angola’s notorious reputation, which includes historical accusations of forced labor and harsh conditions, was ‘absolutely’ a reason for its selection as the site, emphasizing its unique purpose compared to typical ICE detention centers.
