PS5 Digital Edition Storage Reportedly Shrinking in Europe Ahead of September 13 Launch

Prospective PlayStation 5 Digital Edition owners in Europe may soon find themselves with less storage, as reports indicate Sony is set to reduce the console’s internal SSD capacity. This move is reportedly a strategy to circumvent further price increases for the hardware.
According to prominent leaker Billbil-kun, the PS5 Digital Edition’s SSD will shrink from its current 1TB to 825GB. This change is expected to be implemented with the upcoming console chassis-E revision (CFI-2100), which is anticipated to become available for purchase on September 13. The standard PS5 console, which includes a disc drive, is expected to maintain its 1TB SSD.
The reported downgrade comes amidst a period of rising console prices. Sony has previously increased PS5 prices in Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand in April, followed by a $50 hike across all PS5 systems in the US in August. Sony attributed these increases to a ‘challenging economic environment,’ while analysts pointed to higher tariff rates on manufacturing countries as a contributing factor. Microsoft has also raised Xbox console prices, signaling a broader industry trend.
